Nominated for nine Academy Awards and winner of five, including the top categories of Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay. Randle Patrick McMurphy (multi-Oscar winner Jack Nicholson -- "Something's Gotta Give," "As Good As It Gets") is a free-spirited, small-time convict who fakes being crazy so he can get transferred from the state penitentiary to what he thinks will be a more comfortable state mental hospital. But his contagious sense of delightful chaos clashes with the numbing routine of the hospital and the woman in charge of making sure nothing disrupts the sedate mood of the floor, Nurse Ratched (Oscar-winner Louise Fletcher -- "Cruel Intentions," "2 Days in the Valley"). Based on Ken Kesey's acclaimed bestseller. The superb cast also includes Emmy-winner Danny DeVito ("Big Fish," "L.A. Confidential"), Emmy-winner Christopher Lloyd (the "Back to the Future" trilogy, "Who Framed Roger Rabbit") and Brad Dourif (the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, "Murder in the First").

I enjoyed every bit of the movie beginning to end and the book version has only unimportant details left when they translated it, I'd say it's one of jack nicklesons best works

  • A very important scene is missing

Bad edit. The book has a scene where Nurse Rachet has her top pulled off to expose her boobs...can't say more without spoiling the story. A very important scene is missing. It's still a classic movie. Notice all the great actors in the film.

  • Classic

As a Psychology Grad student, I could not handle the ending! I couldn’t sleep. The next day I approached one of my professors nearly crying, “please tell me this movie is outdated!!!!!” I will never watch it again

  • AWESOME!

i just saw this movie last night for the first time and i was completely blown away. Louise Fletcher does an outstanding job playing Nurse Ratched. Jack Nicholson was great and everyone else was great also. i hope hollywood never remakes this movie because i can't think of anyother actors who could do as good a job as these actors did.

I first remember seeing this and my junior English class in 1987. And ever since then Jack Nicholson and his movies he's played and have been one of my favorites. But to me this is one of his best I don't all the movies he made. I believe that one and every Oscar category at that time. One of the few movies to do so. Hat's off to you Jack Nicholson after all these years your still great! There's some classic actors in this movie like Danny DeVito the guy that played in the movies back to the future and others! A must-have for your collection.

  • It’s great.

I watched this movie without knowing much about it. I clenched my teeth the entire time and was stunned at the end. I still shake my head when I think about it.

  • Surprisingly awesome!

I had to watch this for and class film analysis and I was surprised at how good it was. It really shows a different perspective on the mentally ill from how media and television usually paint them. Love the view the director took on the film. The patients we're portrayed more human and the psych ward worker were more like machines.
